The power of the app lies its in multifunctionality- making it irresistible to social media fans, mobile users and companies. Tencent, founded in 1998, has proved that it knows what China’s (mobile) internet users want.They can search for new friends through various mechanisms, from the random “shake,” which connects you with other users shaking their phone to make new friends, to the integration of your phone contacts with the We Chat platform.We Chat’s popularity is not due solely to its design, but also to the reputation of its designer, Tencent, which is China’s most valuable Internet firm by market capitalization.
Weixin was an instant hit; just over 400 days after its launch it already had 100 million users.
July 14th 2015 was the day that a now infamous video of a couple having sex in a Uniqlo dressing cubical went viral across We Chat and Weibo.
The video was quickly deleted by both platforms, but fear not, it was available for purchase on Taobao shortly after.
In January 2013, the number of users had reached 300 million.
By now, there are over 400 million users, with Weixin’s influence going beyond 100 countries.
